It doesn’t really have to. As municipal water comes in or well water comes in and it goes through a backwash process, it goes out to the drain. The drain could be the sewer, it could be your flower gardens. Surprisingly, the water going out in backwash is more purified than the city water coming in because it’s already removed everything, but it’s actually good water that’s going out to whether it’s a flower bed or your sewer. It’s not salt like a water softener.
